The Makinon Auto MC Zoom 80–200mm f4.5 Macro is a relic of the third-party lens boom, and unfortunately, its reputation precedes it. While its all-metal construction feels solid at first glance, closer inspection often reveals a wobbly zoom barrel and a build quality that doesn't match its looks. The handling is further hampered by a crude aperture ring that skips the essential f/5.6 stop, jumping straight from f/4.5 to f/8.

Optically, this lens is a severe weak point. Users consistently report soft images and low contrast, even when stopped down. At the 200mm end, it exhibits a soft, almost halo-like effect, and chromatic aberration is visible. The "Macro" designation is also misleading; it offers only a 1:4 ratio at 200mm and cannot focus closer than roughly 1.2 to 1.7 meters, making it far less useful for close-up work than the label suggests. Its low light performance is poor due to low light transmission, requiring significantly slower shutter speeds than modern lenses.
